Important Information on QuickBooks Desktop Discontinuation

July 10, 2024

As technology continues to evolve, so too does the software we rely on for our daily business operations. Intuit, the company behind QuickBooks, has recently announced significant updates regarding the discontinuation of certain QuickBooks Desktop versions. It’s crucial for users to understand these changes and prepare accordingly.

Key Discontinuation Dates and Details

Mark your calendars: After May 31, 2024, several key services associated with QuickBooks Desktop 2021 will be discontinued. This includes access to:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Payroll
  • Desktop Payments
  • Live Technical Support
  • Online Backup
  • Online Banking
  • Other essential services

Additionally, starting June 1, 2024, critical security updates designed to protect your data will no longer be provided. This means that your software could become vulnerable to security risks if you continue to use it past this date.

Discontinuation of New Subscriptions

In a move to streamline their product offerings, Intuit will stop selling new subscriptions in the US for the following QuickBooks products after September 30, 2024:\

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus
  • QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus
  • QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus
  • QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll

What Does This Mean for Existing Subscribers?

This change does not impact existing subscribers to QuickBooks Desktop Plus and Desktop Payroll, who can continue to renew their subscriptions after September 30, 2024. Intuit will continue to provide security updates, product updates, and support for these subscribers.

It’s also worth noting that QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise products are not affected by this change. Customers can continue to purchase Enterprise subscriptions beyond the September deadline.

What Should You Do Next?

Given these changes, you might be wondering whether to transition to a new software or continue with your current QuickBooks subscription. Here are a few steps you can take:

  • Assess Your Current Needs: Evaluate whether your current version of QuickBooks Desktop meets your business needs or if it’s time to consider alternatives.
  • Explore Alternatives: Consider transitioning to QuickBooks Online or other accounting software which might offer more robust features and better security.
  • Seek Professional Advice: If you’re unsure about what steps to take, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional help.
