The hardest thing to understand in the world is the income tax - Albert Einstein

Barry D. Groebel, CPA has been an accountant for nearly 40 years, predominantly in the taxation practice.  His career has included time with an international public accounting firm, small local accounting firms, a Fortune 500 company and now a regional CPA firm. Barry served as a Partner at Herbein until 2018, and most recently, as a Senior Advisor.

I enjoy the challenge and intrigue of working with a complex body of knowledge - tax laws, rules and regulations - and translating it in a way that clients can understand and hopefully, benefit from.  There is nothing more rewarding than discovering or developing a tax strategy for a client - tax incentives for exporters, special entity structures for state tax savings or tax beneficial allocations in acquisitions - and seeing the client properly implement and benefit from that strategy.

This length and breadth of experience has given Barry a good understanding of a broad range of tax matters - including corporate tax, individual tax and state & local tax. In addition, through specific client assignments and involvement in professional associations, Barry has developed expertise in the area of cooperative taxation, Pennsylvania tax matters and mergers & acquisitions tax planning.

Best Things About Herbein
Great people and interesting work!

How did you first decide on the accounting field?  I followed the lead of my father, who was an accountant at the Post Office and I enjoyed numbers.

Who is the most influential person in your life and why?  My parents - work ethic and quiet resolve from my father and curiosity and social awareness from my mother.

What is your favorite client experience?  Discovering or developing tax savings ideas - such as an IC-DISC for exporters or S corp subsidiaries to reduce PA taxes - and assisting with the implementation.

What would you like to be remembered for?  Being a good listener and having intellectual curiosity.

What would you tell a brand new college graduate trying to get a job in accounting?  Get a good broad understanding of all aspects of accounting and then, if possible, develop a marketable specialty.

What is something not many people know about you?  I have been to over 100 Shakespeare plays and once joined my daughter in a performance of "15 Minute Hamlet"

What distinguishes Herbein from other firms in your opinion?  The culture and camaraderie of a local firm with the sophistication and intriguing work of an international firm.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?  Being with my wife and daughter, exercising, reading and cooking.

What is your guilty pleasure?  Good podcasts and craft beer in moderation, not necessarily in that order.
