September 2018 Herbein Hero – Grow Pittsburgh

Herbein is pleased to announce that the recipient of the September 2018 Herbein Community Heroes Award is Grow Pittsburgh, a nonprofit group whose mission is to teach people how to grow food and promote the benefits that gardens bring to our neighborhoods.  They envision the day when everyone in the region grows and eats fresh, local and healthy food.

Grow Pittsburgh is a resource for urban gardeners of all ages and income levels, teaching everyone from pre-k students to seniors how to grow their own food.   In neighborhoods across Allegheny County, Grow Pittsburgh helps communities start community gardens and keep them thriving.  Since 2010, they have supported over 80 gardens with tools, materials and education.

Grow Pittsburgh also runs their own urban farms that grow produce for the community and serve as training centers for teens and young adults.

Schools are another area of focus for Grow Pittsburgh.  Now in their 12th season, they support gardens at 33 schools with a population of over 16,000 students and with plans to expand to another 25 schools over the next two years. These Learning Gardens are ADA accessible outdoor classrooms that transform urban schoolyards into vibrant gathering places where students receive gardening and cooking lessons.  To be eligible to receive a garden, a school must have at least half of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

The $500 Community Hero Award from Herbein + Company, Inc. will be used to support the School Garden Program expansion.  For more information about Grow Pittsburgh, visit their website at www.growpittsburgh.org.
