August 2016 Herbein Hero – Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

Herbein is pleased to announce the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank as the recipient of the August 2016 Herbein Community Heroes Award in the amount of $500.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank was founded in 1980 to help families who were suffering after the closing of the steel mills.  Today, the Food Bank serves 11 counties in Southwestern PA and feeds over 110,000 people each month.  A donation of $1 allows the Food Bank to purchase five meals.  That means the $500 Community Hero award will translate into 2,500 meals for those in the community who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

In an effort to provide families with healthy options, one of the services the Food Bank provides is Produce to People. Each month, families can visit one of 17 different distribution sites and take home 30-50 pounds of food – mostly fresh produce.  The Food Bank makes sure families know how to prepare the fresh produce by providing recipe cards which can also be found online: https://www.pittsburghfoodbank.org/photo-illustrated-tip-and-recipe-cards/

One of their biggest fundraisers of the year is coming up on October 3rd – a golf outing and clay shoot at Longue Vue County Club in Verona, PA.  Anyone wishing to participate should contact Maggie Beldecos, Corporate and Community Engagement, at mbeldecos@pittsburghfoodbank.org.
