“Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it.  Autograph your work with excellence.”  Vince Lombardi

Paula D. (Deane) Markle, CPA has over 30 years of experience in public accounting, including 6 years with a “Big 4” accounting firm.  Deane began her career with Herbein in 2003 and was named Senior Manager of Tax Services in 2016.

Licensed in both Pennsylvania and North Carolina, Deane has experience with federal and multi-state income tax compliance and planning services for all types of business entities.  Areas of specialty include real estate, healthcare, manufacturing, investment companies and service providers.

She has a particular passion for tax planning and advisory services related to estates and trusts and has completed the estate planning certificate program offered by the Association of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). She’s planning to take the certificate exam and receive her certification in early 2020. This certification is awarded to CPAs with enhanced knowledge of the estate planning life cycle, including gifting strategies, charitable planning and integration of client’s estate plans with tax and financial plans. “Without proper planning and analysis, estates can suffer serious tax consequences,” explains Deane. To avoid those kinds of mistakes, she works closely with estate and trust attorneys to advise closely-held businesses, high-net worth individuals and beneficiaries of plans to limit their tax liability.

With all of her clients, Deane takes a proactive, hands-on approach to help them reach their goals.  As she puts it, “I will do whatever it takes to get the job done. My clients will tell you that. They value my insight and expertise and these relationships make my job extremely satisfying.”

Being able to balance her career at Herbein while raising three daughters has also been very satisfying for Deane. “My favorite thing about working for Herbein is flexibility,” asserts Deane, “I started part-time with Herbein when my youngest two daughters were in preschool.  Herbein allowed me to gradually increase my hours as my daughters grew until I was ready to join the firm full-time.  This allowed me to have the best of both worlds:  time with my children and time to do the type of work that I love to do.”  Those two daughters are now in college and another daughter lives and works in North Carolina. The entire family, including Deane’s husband Bill, love vacationing together every year in Disney World.  Deane also enjoys reading, walking and relaxing with her two dogs.

I decided when I was eleven years old that I wanted to become a certified public accountant.  When I was in high school, I took an accounting course and I loved it!  I completed the year-end project in one weekend, although we had over a month to do it!  I really love the work; and have not regretted my decision to pursue a career in accounting.

Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
God.  He has opened up many doors for me in all areas of my life.

What is your favorite client experience?
Several years ago, one of my clients mailed a letter to Carl Herbein and told him what a great job I did on a project.  More recently, a new client emailed a few of my superiors that the Herbein tax team did a great job.  Both of these experiences meant so much to me!

What would you like to be remembered for?
I would like to be remembered for being helpful and kind to others.

What would you tell a brand new college graduate trying to get a job in accounting?
I would recommend getting a job with a local or regional firm so that you can try both the audit and accounting work and the tax compliance and consulting work so that you can decide in which area you would like to concentrate.  If you choose to go with a national firm, then you generally must choose which area to pursue from the outset.

What is something not many people know about you?
I taught a class for new hires while at a national firm.  That's how I met my husband!

I enjoy walking.  My husband and I like to go to train, antique and craft shows.  I also like to sew and cross-stitch, although I rarely have time to do these 2 things!
