June 2016 Herbein Hero – Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh

Herbein is pleased to announce Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh as the recipient of the June 2016 Herbein Community Heroes Award in the amount of $500.

Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh is a group of parents and professionals dedicated to enriching the lives of people with Down syndrome. The group began as the Down Syndrome Group of WPA in 1975. Over time, DSGWPA grew to be more involved in the larger community, reaching out to new parents, physicians and hospitals.  In 2005, the name was changed to Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh to specifically identify the region served.

The mission of DSAP is simple – to support families of children with Down syndrome.  It starts with a New Parent Packet as families begin their journey.  According to David Holzworth, Vice President of the Board of DSAP, “The packets are designed for families who have just given birth or are about to give birth to a child with Down syndrome.  We want them to know that they are not alone.  These packets provide information on support groups, advocates and doctors who can help.”

Currently, DSAP provides services for more than 1,500 people with Down syndrome and they are gearing up for their biggest fundraiser of the year, the Three Rivers DASH for Down Syndrome, to be held in October at Highmark Stadium on Pittsburgh’s Southside.  More than 2,000 friends and families typically gather to promote the acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome through an awareness walk, food, games and entertainment.

The Herbein team congratulates Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh on their success providing help to families affected by Down syndrome. For more information on DSAP and the upcoming Three Rivers DASH click here:
