March 2018 Herbein Hero – TRPIL

Herbein is pleased to announce that the recipient of the March 2018 Herbein Community Heroes Award is Transitional Paths to Independent Living (TRPIL), a multi-service agency assisting people with disabilities throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.

In 2017, TRPIL served nearly 2,500 individuals through various programs designed to provide independent living skills training, information and referral services, peer support, advocacy and transition assistance. Another 4,300 referral calls were processed. TRPIL also provides assistive technology equipment through a lending library to see if a device could make someone’s life easier such as adaptive telephone, keyboards or computer programs.

TRPIL also works with nearly 600 direct care workers who work with 600 consumers in daily living skills (getting out of bed, meal preparations, light housekeeping). Staff

members are trained to provide information to people like Ed so that they can make independent choices to suit their needs. “TRPIL changed my life,” says Ed “Not because I got a job or a paycheck, but because I got access to information. I was able to learn how to drive with hand controls. I learned to manage my resources. In 2009, I purchased a house, and became a Dad. And thanks to TRPIL, for 21 years, I’ve been able to help other individuals with disabilities take cont

rol of their lives to reach their own goals.”

The $500 Community Hero Award from Herbein + Company, Inc. will be used to help renovate a former YWCA building in Washington, PA for use as their new headquarters and community center. Phase 1 will be completed by August 2018.
