February 2018 Herbein Hero – Animal Friends, Inc.
Herbein is pleased to announce that the recipient of the February 2018 Herbein Community Heroes Award is Animal Friends, Inc., an animal resource center serving the needs of pets in Western PA and surrounding counties for more than 70 years. Their programs include humane rescue, shelter and adoption services for homeless pets, wellness programs, pet therapy, pet food bank and pet behavior classes.
Animal Friends is particularly dedicated to stopping the problem of pet overpopulation. Since 1993, they have been providing spay/neuter services through several programs including: a subsidized option through a community partnership with local veterinary clinics; an in-house clinic at their Animal Wellness Center minutes from downtown Pittsburgh on a 75-acre wooded campus; and a mobile program supporting rural shelters and community groups. Combined, these programs spay and neuter almost 10,000 animals annually.
Another Animal Friends mission is making sure that no pet goes hungry. Their Chow Wagon program, founded in 2007, actively supports the underserved pet owners and caregivers in our community by providing food pantries with animal food for their pets. A total of 78,385 pounds of donations of pet food, litter and other supplies were distributed to a record 21,390 families, individuals, feral cat feeders and other organizations.
Fundraising events occur all year and a crowd favorite is the Bow Wow Bingo Soiree. This year the event will be held on April 21, 2018 at 6:00 PM at Edgewood Country Club. Attendees will be able to try their hand at No Fleas Scratch-Off Game, Chance Auction and Specialty Bingo Games while sipping on fabulous drinks during a cocktail hour followed by a deluxe sit-down dinner. The $500 Community Hero Award from Herbein + Company, Inc. will be used toward Animal Friends programs that aim to reduce pet overpopulation including the spay/neuter program.
