My First Tax Season - Kimberly
Kimberly Jones - 2013 Herbein Tax Intern
Hello everyone, my name is Kimberly Jones and I worked as a tax intern during the 2013 tax season for Herbein + Company, Inc.
I am currently a senior at Duquesne University and just recently finished my spring semester last week. I am majoring in accounting and finance and will be graduating in December of this year. I live in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh, Pa which was ideal for commuting to Herbein's Pittsburgh office and to school.
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, shopping, music, and sports. I play on two softball teams and thought it was really cool that the office was right across the street from PNC Park.
When I first started to apply for internships I used Duquesne University's career services for help. I am so glad I chose to go to a college that makes every effort to help their students find internships and jobs. This is how I found out about interning at Herbein. It was great that I could interview with them right on campus between classes. Prior to my interview I looked at their website and it seemed like a great place to work. I wanted to work for a regional CPA firm where I would have the opportunity to experience both tax and audit. Also, it was important to me to find an internship that could lead to a full time position in the future. I could have not been more excited when I received the offer to work for them during tax season.
Going into the internship I was nervous about jumping right into doing taxes. Now that April 15 has passed I realize that even though I had no prior experience of doing taxes, everyone was helpful in assisting me with learning the software and how to prepare the returns. It was a wonderful internship and would recommend it to any student as a stepping stone to their future career. I was able to see and be a part of the process of preparing a return and get feedback on my work. I was treated as any other employee which prepared me for what I would be doing after the internship as a full time employee. I learned so many real life work skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. Herbein made my internship very enjoyable even though it was during their most stressful and busy time of the year. The entire company made me feel welcome and comfortable to ask for help or if I had any questions. Finishing my first tax season was a huge accomplishment and I could not be more excited to accept their offer of a full time position in January after I graduate.
The four months working there went incredibly fast for me and I cannot wait to be back next year. I am thankful for being able to work for such a great company and for all that made it memorable.
